Kalahari fragrant with Wild Jasmine - 02.03.06
“Looking at the average for the entire park area we had 350 mm of rain in January and February alone”, says Jaco Visser, the Manager of Kalahari Anib Lodge. “Usually we get about 190 mm for the whole year.” Enthusiastically he continues: “The seasonal rivers came down in flood, the natural pans filled up with water and our little dam was also topped up. The grass stands at about 1 m tall, you stumble over wild watermelon everywhere and in the evening the vanilla-like fragrance of wild jasmine fills the air.” Wild jasmine, according to the people of the Kalahari, is the plant with the small white flowers which open after sunset and close before sunrise. The animals also enjoy the paradise after the rains: whether gemsbok, springbok, hartebeest or blue wildebeest – all of them are well-fed and have produced numerous offspring.
Good rainfalls in January and February have transformed Gondwana Kalahari Park into a green paradise.
In contrast to other parts of the country, guests did not really encounter any problems on their way to Gondwana Kalahari Park. In the end of February some of them could not continue their journey further south, however, and had to turn back near Mariental: after the sluice gates of nearby Hardap Dam had been opened to reduce the strain on the dam, the main artery road to the south was flooded.
The whole of Namibia is over the moon about an exceptionally rewarding rainy season. Many of the ephemeral rivers flooded and thereby blocked quite a few tourists on their way to the next accommodation facility. The country’s dams – vital for the supply of drinking water – are full, some of them literally to the brim. Everywhere the desert shows off its green finery...
