New entrance into Kgalagadi Park - 19.10.07
After a break of 17 years Namibia and South Africa have reopened the border crossing point at Mata Mata east of Koës, or rather, southeast of Gochas. Since Mata Mata also serves as entrance gate into the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park travellers no longer have to make the detour via the border crossing point at Rietfontein near Aroab, 100 km further south.
The cross-border park, shared by South Africa and Botswana, covers an area of about 36,000 km² - almost twice the size of Etosha National Park. Kgalagadi is characterised by Kalahari scenery with red dunes, yellow grasses and green acacias, as well as by two large seasonal rivers, the Auob and Nossob. Wildlife typically includes lion, oryx antelope, springbok and ostrich. Large parts of the park are quite suited for city cars, but a four-wheel drive – and some experience of driving in sand - is indispensable in the remote areas.
