Released Zebra are raising Foals - 26.03.07
The 25 Burchell's zebra, which were released in Gondwana Kalahari Park last July, are now raising offspring. Jaco Visser, the manager and co-owner of Anib Lodge, spotted two newborn zebra foals a few days ago; mothers and babies look healthy. Numerous young springbok and quite a few young Oryx have been seen, too.
The absence of rain, on the other hand, gives reason for concern. A mere 44 mm were recorded in the Kalahari Park since the start of the rainy season in October; this is one tenth of the rainfall recorded during the entire rainy season a year ago (430 mm). This year it is hardly likely that even the annual average of 190 mm can still be reached within the next few weeks. The rainy season usually ends in early May. Due to the generous rainfalls during the previous two years, game animals will, however, still find sufficient grazing in the next months as well.
